About the test

What is the MOT?

The MOT test is a vehicle check that is compulsory for all vehicles, including cars and motorbikes, that are over three years old and registered in the United Kingdom.

It is carried out by government approved MOT testing centres. The test becomes due three years after first registration, and the certificate is valid for one year, after which the vehicle needs to be re-tested.

Testing makes sure vehicles are safe and roadworthy at the time of the test. Bear in mind that a certificate only guarantees roadworthiness at the time of issue, even though it is valid for a year: something to remember if you are buying a used car.

MOT questions

When is my first MOT due?

The MOT becomes due three years after the vehicle was first registered. It is compulsory for all vehicles registered in the United Kingdom that are over three years old, including cars and motorbikes.

How long does an MOT certificate last?

The certificate is valid for one year, after which the vehicle needs to be tested again.

Can I have my MOT done early?

Yes. An MOT can be taken up to a month before the due date. If you bring the old certificate (or the registration document for a first MOT), the new certificate is issued from the due date rather than the earlier test date.

Does a pass mean the car is roadworthy for a year?

Testing makes sure the vehicle is safe and roadworthy at the time of the test. The certificate only guarantees roadworthiness at the time it is issued, even though it is valid for a year. Worth bearing in mind if you are buying a used car.

Who carries out the test?

MOTs are carried out by government approved MOT testing centres. At Blossomgate Motors we test Class I and II (motorbikes and mopeds) and Class IV (cars and light goods vehicles).

Is your MOT due?

You can have it done up to a month early and keep your renewal date. Send a request and we will confirm a time by phone or email.
